Preventing Lyme Disease

Preventing Lyme disease in dogs and cats involves a multi-faceted approach.

  • First and foremost, if you see what you think is a tick either remove the tick yourself or have your vet remove it for you. You can also have the tick sent off to see if it carries Lyme disease.

  • Vaccination against Lyme disease is available for dogs but not for cats, so it's crucial to discuss with your vet whether the vaccine is appropriate for your dog based on their risk factors and geographical location.

Tick prevention is paramount

  • Achieved through the use of topical or oral tick preventatives which can be prescribed by your veterinarian.

  • There are also holistic alternatives available on the market and in our store like the Earth MD Outdoor Shield.

Regular grooming and thorough tick checks after outdoor activities can also help remove ticks before they transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Creating a tick-safe environment in your yard by keeping grass short, removing leaf litter, and using environmentally safe tick control measures can further reduce the risk of exposure. Lastly, educating yourself about the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease in pets can aid in early detection and prompt treatment if necessary.
