Treat Time Chronicles Vol: 3

Well, we’ve come to the end of our October mini series, all about treats! To wrap things up, let’s talk about one of the most important topics, moderation. Treats are fun (and let’s be honest, hard to resist), but they should only make up about 10% of your dog’s total daily calories. Too many can lead to unwanted weight gain and even obesity.

October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month, and according to the Feed Real Institute, “Obesity is linked to many chronic conditions in dogs, including diabetes, cancer, and joint disorders.” And yes, even raw-fed dogs can become overweight! That’s why it’s so important to keep a watchful eye on your pup’s body condition. For breeds with thick double coats or long hair, you might need to give them a quick “pat down” to feel how they’re really doing under all that fluff.

If you’re concerned about your dog’s weight, there are a few simple steps that can make a big difference. Try cutting back on treat frequency, switching to a diet with fewer carbohydrates, and adding more play or walks into their day whenever possible. Small changes can lead to big improvements over time. If your pup is still struggling with extra weight, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your vet.

And speaking of treats, there’s something to celebrate! October 30th is Treat Your Pet Day, and October 31st is, of course, Halloween! So, from October 27th to November 2nd, we’ll be handing out a little treat for your dog in the store. Stop by and grab one for your furry friend; they deserve it!
