Do You Have an Emergency Kit: For Your Pet?

Pet Preparedness Month, observed in June, is a dedicated time to raise awareness about the importance of an emergency plan for pets. Whether it's a natural disaster, an unexpected evacuation, or any other emergency, being prepared can ensure the safety and well-being of your furry, feathered, or scaly friends.

Most of us could confidently grab what we need for ourselves in a emergency but, have you thought about what your pet may need or where you could stay in an emergency?

1. Build a Pet Emergency Kit

  • Food & Water: Minimum 1-week supply with bowls.

  • Medical: Medications, medical records, and a pet first-aid kit.

  • Gear & ID: Spare collar, leash, harness, updated ID tags, and microchip info.

  • Sanitation: Litter/box for cats, waste bags for dogs.

  • Comfort & Transport: Familiar toys/blankets and a secure carrier or crate.

2. Create an Evacuation Plan

  • Routes & Contacts: Map out multiple evacuation routes and keep emergency contacts (vet, local shelters) handy.

  • Pet-Friendly Lodging (Barrie Area): Confirm pet policies at local hotels. Valid as of June 2026:

    • Super 8, Travelodge, Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn, Allure Hotel, Ramada Inn, Horseshoe Valley.

  • Buddy System & Practice: Arrange backup care with neighbours/family and run regular emergency drills.

3. During & After an Emergency

  • During: Stay calm (pets mirror your anxiety), monitor local news, and follow authority instructions.

  • After: Check your pet for injuries, anticipate stress-driven behaviour changes, and re-establish their normal routine as quickly as possible.
