Happy New Year

Updated: Jan 14

A New Year Full of Fresh Starts

January brings a fresh start and a chance to build better habits for ourselves and our pets. Many people use this time of year to focus on moving more, eating better, and creating routines that last. Whether that means more time outdoors, healthier meals, or stronger connections with your pets, small changes can make a big difference. (Even more so this year if you follow Numerology, as this is a 1 year: a time for new beginnings and new habits to better your future self.)

This month, we are recognizing Walk Your Pet Month, National Train Your Dog Month, and Weight Loss Awareness Month. Each one highlights simple ways to support your pet’s health, happiness, and overall wellbeing.

Walk Your Pet Month

Fresh Air and Daily Movement

Regular walks are one of the easiest ways to support your pet’s physical and mental health. A daily walk helps burn energy, keeps joints moving, and gives pets a chance to explore their surroundings.

Benefits of daily walks include

Better heart health

Support for a healthy weight

Less stress and anxiety

Stronger routines and confidence

Mental stimulation through sniffing and exploring

National Train Your Dog Month

Building Skills and Confidence

Training is about more than teaching commands. It helps dogs understand expectations, builds confidence, and strengthens the relationship between pets and their people.

Training helps

Improve communication

Reduce unwanted behaviours

Provide mental exercise

Build confidence in new situations

Consistent routines and positive rewards make training more enjoyable and effective.

Weight Loss Awareness Month

Healthy Choices Start at Mealtime

Maintaining a healthy weight plays an important role in your pet’s long term health. Proper portions support better mobility, digestion, and comfort, especially as pets age.

Why portion control matters

Helps prevent overeating

Lowers the risk of weight related health concerns

Supports steady energy levels

Reduces strain on joints and the heart

Using pre-portioned meals or measuring portions carefully can help keep feeding routines consistent.

If you are unsure how much to feed, a feeding calculator based on your pet’s age, weight, and activity level can be a helpful starting point. I say, starting point, as we always recommend "feeding the dog in front of you. "

January sale favourites that work well as rewards include: Pig ears, Goat Milk bites and Benny Bully’s. It's also important to be mindful of how much/many treats your dogs or cat is getting as well. Even if they give you those "sad wide eyes," they can be a hidden source of too many calories.

Looking Ahead

As the year begins, it is a great time to focus on simple habits that support a healthy and happy life for your pets.

If you have questions about feeding, transitioning to raw, or choosing the right products, help is always available. Here’s to a year filled with good routines, healthy choices, and plenty of wagging tails.
